Lifestyle
You would probably easily find words to describe many nations. But what can You say about Lithuanians? For this, you should have a deeper look into our lifestyle – culture, customs and traditions, religion, love for sports, eating and drinking habits, time-spending style and entertainments.
Culture
If you have a passion for literature, art, music or films of a specific country, you can probably tell much about the country and its people even if you have never been there. Perhaps You can also tell something about Lithuania? Not yet? Then we invite You to get to know some information about our culture – art, cinema, music, and theatre.
Traditions
We, the Balts, like many other old cultures, have built our calendar system on our knowledge of natural phenomena and celestial bodies playing a role in human survival, and on old myths and the holy sanctity. Neither Christianity and ecclesiastical dogmas nor liturgy have made us abandon the rituals, customs and beliefs inherited from the old times – they are still alive.
Religion
In Lithuania, the Church is separated from the State, meaning that there is no official religion in Lithuania. Yet, religious communities are classified into traditional and non-traditional. Traditional religions are those which have existed in Lithuania for at least 300 years, while non-traditional are those which have been professed in the country for 25 or more years
Sport
Lithuanians practice over 100 branches of sport. Basketball is the most popular sport, followed by football and track-and-field athletics. Apart from these, Lithuanians are also interested in car-racing and boxing and enjoy watching figure skating, sport dancing, cycling, and contests between promising Lithuanian tennis-players and competitors from other countries.
Food & Drinks
Before we look deeper into the traditional Lithuanian cuisine, it should be said that it is not static – it has been changing under the influence of many historic factors, as the choice of food varied among social strata, to acquire its present shape. Even though Lithuania is a small country, eating habits and food preferences differ from region to region.
Leisure Time
In autumns and winters, people flow to theatre and concert halls. Art galleries and museums do not complain about the lack of visitors, either. Warm season – spring and summer – brings much more colours to people’s life, as they can spend more time outdoors. The list of possible activities is endless, from vibrant nightlife to weekends at a lake or family and friend gatherings.
Festivals
Vilnius, the capital city, is a leader in Lithuania by the number and variety of festivals held every year, offering much pleasure to the eyes and ears of lovers of classical and modern music, theatre- and cinema-goers, and fans of modern dances. Other Lithuanian towns also have cultural activities to offer. Especially many and diverse festivals are held in summertime. Jazz, rock, blues, alternative, and electronic music lovers will surely find one to their taste.
