Žuvintas biosphere reserve is included in the UNESCO network
Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve has been included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
"Becoming part of the UNESCO biosphere reserve network is the result of a long and careful preparatory work, done by more than one organization. We do our best to preserve the Žuvintas natural environment while handling the most valuable areas. As part of UNESCO biosphere reserve network, we will have access to international best practice, and share our experience with colleagues from other countries. Our biggest concern will be involvement of research organizations, local communities and local authorities in this activity“, - said Arunas Pranaitis, Director of the Reserve.
Established in 1976, the World Network of Biosphere Reserves currently embraces almost 600 protected areas in 114 countries. Biosphere reserves are recognized as the world's flagship areas with new approaches to environmental protection and sustainable development. Areas, included in the network, remain subordinate to the national authorities, but the newly acquired experiences and ideas are shared at the national, regional and international levels. Global network promotes integrated management of land, water and biodiversity, involing local residents, based on already existing practices, that confirm the effectiveness of such strategies for better environmental protection and a consistent, efficient use of resources
Located in the south-western part of the physical-geographical region of Nemunas midland and Neris lowland plateau in Southern Lithuania, Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve includes wetland complexes covering the area of 6940 ha. This reserve is one of the richest areas of the country in terms of natural diversity.
